Now, I've never quite understood the identity of 'modern' poetry. It doesn't rhyme. The rhythm is off-beat. The idea's are cryptic. Such set rules and regulations. Unfortunately, much of today's modern poetry, in the desire to meet these standards, becomes more like music lyrics. The most noticeable difference between music lyrics and poetry, even though they both are similar and could be classified as the same, is the music. Music lyrics have music to back up and enforce their idea and emotion. For a poem to be as effective at portraying the said emotion, is has to do it on it's own, therefore the figuritive and emotive language techniques can't afford to be so cryptic. Simplicity doesn't take the beauty out of a poem and many poets of today forget that. Rhyimg isn't old fashioned, it just show's off your vocabulary. Structure isn't suffocating, it's a challenge.
